Directed by Hideshi Hino
Synopsis
An artist who copes with the grief of his wife leaving him by going into the sewer and painting the filthy and decrepit things he sees. On one such trip, he discovers a mermaid who has become trapped down there and brings her home to try and heal the festering sores on her stomach. Her condition rapidly grows worse, however, and as she becomes more and more disfigured by her illness, she begs the artist to paint her before she dies.

The golden age of grotesque. Festering pus filled disgustoid body sludge fervor that explores psychical pain, anguish, and obsession/devotion. Sure, it’s disgusting, but there’s more to this than live worms leaking from tumors, dayglo pus spewing from boiled lacerations, or intense agonizing bathtub writhing... there’s fleshed out characters, narrative structure, reflective thoughts on grief and how we handle it, spectacular effects wizardry, and one hell of a conclusion to a genuinely tragic story that’s riveting and way more absorbing than most folks will ever lead you to believe.

An artist rescues a mermaid in a sewer who develops bleeding sores all over her body, paints a portrait with her oozes and eventually disjoints her.
All my lost treasures are here. All the beautiful things I’ve lost, are here.
painfully disturbing and at-most revolting, but the easiest five stars given out of the six Guinea Pig movies, which is interesting since it’s the final film in the Japanese series—mainly because it’sdirected by Hideshi Hino which meant going back to its shock and gore roots. This is what I will forever think of when I think of the graphic notoriety behind this series. there’s nothing comical, just pure body horror visuals of pus-filled pores, infested blood worm boils, and mermaid convulsions,… -

Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Mermaid just needed festering tumors of cancerous decay gnawed by maggots with malicious hate to become a fairy tale the whole family can relate.

art as a colorful reflection of your dreams, your surroundings and the people you love. but what if your surrounding is a stained apartment or a sewer filled with worms and fetuses? and what if the person you love is an infected mermaid covered in bloody, puss-filled tumors? and your dream is to put your loved one out of their misery by violently dismembering them? a surprisingly melancholy portrait of the pain of loss and deforming nature of time and art for a shot-on-video extreme gore exercise.

Film #2 of the "Scavenger Hunt #4" Challenge!
Task #15 : A film so gross you think barf bags should be required!

___________________________________________________________________Where oh where am I going to find a film so gross I think barf bags should be required! I'm a pretty tough cookie when it comes to viewing horrific, disgusting and perverse film fare! So I had to really search my psyche to discover what if anything could make me want to toss my proverbial cookies!
Then it hit me I recalled a scene in "Planet of Terror" involving some pretty gnarly pus making its dastardly debut on the silver screen and my stomach did a somersault or two letting me know in no…

masterpiece of red guts, multi-color oozing pus shooting out from wounds, squirming worms puked on the floor. layers of slimy blood everywhere. observation of a quick-decaying body. obsession, grief, loss. nothing more romantic than your honey painting you with the seven colors of pus <3
easily the best guinea pig, even if it was just for the grotesque special effects - but the story shines here. so so good.

Review by Sally Jane Black
This might be the best of the Guinea Pig series. It is unflinchingly disgusting, but it manages to convey an idea or two beyond simply reveling in its foul imagery. For the most part, it seems to be about the sacrifice and pains of being a muse, of being the lover of an artist consumed by his work. It has an almost feminist undertone to it in that it suggests the injustice of its own situation, but it is still an exploitation-horror film--it doesn't go all the way. In the end, it's possible what we've seen is a manifestation of guilt and madness.
It is worth noting that this film nearly made me lose my dinner. It should be commended for its cartoonishly disgusting make up effects, for they are truly effective.

Guinea Pig 6: Mermaid in the Manhole is, at its core, a film about love, obsession, and loss. A widowed man, who is a talented painter, meets a mermaid in a manhole. When he notices that she is unwell, he offers to help her and takes her to his home. He paints portraits of her, carefully capturing her beauty. Soon, though, her worsening illness sheds her stunning physicality away. At first, his paintings documented a blossoming love and warm intimacy between himself and his new muse. In the end, he only had artwork that documented the destruction of her essence and decaying of her flesh to show.
For the first time in the series, a fascinating premise is explored thoughtfully…

Way to go with the final part of the series! Pus-filled boils, worm-infested bloody entrails, swirling mermaids writhing in ecstatic agony, all the things we've come to expect from the Guinea Pig films really, but this is different. There are developed characters, interesting locations and a level of personal empathy developed over the course of the film.
The effects in Mermaid in the Manhole are definitely a step-up from the previous couple of episodes, and more akin to Hideshi Hino's Flower of Flesh and Blood. Weeping cancerous pustules are delightfully awful, and really quite engaging in a 'vom your dinner back up' kind of way. Clearly still made on a shoestring budget, I really enjoyed this and despite the technical…

Splash: The Dark Side. This one's legit y'all! I'm not sure what I was expecting - probably not to find in this installment the most repulsive, yet simultaneously beguiling watch of the whole Guinea Pig series, and yet here we are! Director Hideshi Hino returns to the fold and brings with him the kind of mainline gross out that was missing in the comedy misfire of Part 4 and the surreal antics of Android. This one explodes in a messy tumescent goop of malignant growths oozing polychromatic pus and blood and a literal shit ton of live worms. So many worms - disgustingly writhing out of tumours, puked up in blood. Seriously, if you're vermiphobic, this is NOT the film…
